Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Programs

The School of Information Technology offers two HDR programs, namely the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree programs.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

[+/-] Course Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in the School of Information Technology may be undertaken in the principal areas of research offered by the School including, but not limited to content-based multimedia information retrieval, supply chain management systems & logistics, computational techniques & stochastic modeling, artificial intelligence, computer graphics & image analysis, embedded systems & autonomous mobile robotics and data mining & knowledge discovery.

[+/-] Course Structure

This is a 100% research program, with a thesis requirement of a maximum of 100,000 words.
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) signifies that the holder has completed a course of postgraduate training in research under proper academic supervision, and has submitted a thesis that the examiners have declared to be significant contribution to knowledge, and that demonstrates the candidate’s capacity to carry out independent research. The maximum period of candidature is 4 years (full-time) and 8 years (part-time).

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

[+/-] Course description

Successful completion of the program will signify that the candidate has successfully completed a course of research training and satisfied the examiners that he/she can carry out a research project and critically analyse the results.

The MPhil program may be undertaken in the principle areas of research offered by the School as mentioned in the above under the PhD program. While it is not necessary that an MPhil thesis would make a major contribution to the discipline by way of new knowledge (as a PhD would require), an MPhil thesis would be expected to make a contribution to an existing body of knowledge, by applying, clarifying, critiquing or interpreting that knowledge.

[+/-] Course Structure

The MPhil is a 100% research program. A research candidate is required to undertake a program of supervised research within the School resulting in the completion of a major thesis, of a maximum of 50,000 words. The normal length of candidature is 1.5 years (full-time) or 3 years (part-time).

HDR Scholarships

The School of IT offers scholarships to eligible candidates for the Higher Degree by Research (HDR) degree programs. The scholarships offered are worth RM 48,000.00 per year for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program and RM 54,000 per year for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
